Overview of Grade 12 Continuous Academics
Learning and skill development in all subject areas continued through delivery of curriculum, lessons and opportunities! Synchronous (live) daily Zoom lessons took place as per the regular six-day cycle during regular school hours, allowed for connections with peers and teachers face-to-face, in addition to Discord lessons which allow for more discussion. Curriculum, lessons, Zoom recordings, tasks, projects, grades, feedback, calendars and messages were shared through ManageBac, Zoom and Discord. Guidance and learning support was ongoing through Zoom and other means, and library support was available through research and citation workshops or as needed by appointment with our librarian (Ms. Hayward). Students have access to databases like Global Issues in Context, Gale Canada in Context and Academic OneFile.
DP May 2020 Exams were canceled and replaced with culminating tasks during the last weeks of school. IB Diploma results were determined by a combination coursework and predicted grades. Grade 12 students completed a self-guided study on any topic in June. Assessments were ongoing in the form of conversations, formative tasks such as online quizzes/tests, assignments, independent studies and culminating tasks.
100% of Our Grads Were Accepted into University!
The SJA Guidance Department continued to maintain open communication with Grade 12 students and their families in regards to post-secondary education. The effects of COVID-19 did not impact university acceptances in any capacity; students pushed forward as normal and continued to receive offers from schools worldwide (Canada, UK, Australia). Final marks for Grade 12 courses were electronically submitted onto the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) by the beginning of July. IB Diplomas were sent directly to the universities at the beginning of July. The graduation requirement to complete 40 hours of community involvement was suspended for the 2019-2020 school year. Each student’s academic progress was tracked to ensure that the chosen university program offer’s conditions are met, and flexible hours for academic/post-secondary counselling were available via email/phone/Discord.
Grade 12 Expectations
Teachers posted the daily learning expectations on ManageBac by 8:15 am, delivered engaging lessons that encouraged students to explore the world and provided opportunities for interactive learning, graded assignments and provided feedback on ManageBac in a timely manner, communicated with families by responding to student questions from 8:15-4:00 within one hour, provided students with the necessary resources and continued to deliver curriculum requirements of the IB and Ontario Ministry.
Students were expected to log into ManageBac before 9:00 am to check the daily learning expectations, attend the morning assembly at 8:45 am, ensure any assigned work is completed and submitted by deadlines, attend class on Zoom or Discord with enthusiasm and an excitement to learn, communicate any concerns with teachers and participate in Student Life activities. Additionally, students took pictures of products to share their amazing, hard work with the school community!
Parents assisted students at home to the best of their ability, used school resources like ManageBac to keep up to date with student progress, encouraged the student to participate in class and reached out to subject and homeroom teachers with questions, concerns and feedback.
