Overview of JK to Grade 2 Continuous Academics

On March 23, 2020, our teachers rose to the challenge of continuous learning quickly and efficiently! Both homeroom and specialist classes were offered in creative, interactive online formats for our students. To accommodate the difficulties of delivering curriculum online, the school year was extended.

Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2 students and parents enjoyed printed-out packages, a regular Monday-to-Friday schedule with flexibility, live (synchronous) lessons,  face-to-face interaction between classmates and teachers virtually, pre-recorded video (asynchronous) lessons weekly to allow flexibility, tools shared daily on Seesaw including schedules, lessons, audio instructions, links, tasks, RAZ Kids assignments, and teacher feedback, and finally, pencil-paper activities and supplies to continue development of fine motor skills.

During our continuous learning, curriculum increased focus on numeracy and literacy:

Language

The DRA assessments for Term 3 were modified to be conducted in an online format, Term 3 OWAs were replaced with a compilation of writing in a class anthology, novel studies progressed as a read-aloud, group readings or individual readings with follow-up discussions and tasks and SK to Grade 2 students completed RAZ reading assignments.

Math

Lessons were taught online at a slower pace to ensure conceptual understanding, which also allows for additional practice time. Assessments were conducted in various age-appropriate formats.

Additionally, Term 3 Units of Inquiry continued with modified lessons suited to an online platform, lessons with specialist teachers continued with weekly live and offline lesson options and our librarian visited classes for read-alouds and workshops as needed!

Junior Kindergarten Expectations

Teachers

Teachers sent morning announcements via Seesaw and/or email, containing daily announcements, activities and links. They created bi-weekly printed packages to be delivered to families, hosted a daily virtual call to go over instructions and concepts and used Seesaw for daily activities and instructional videos. Teachers were readily available for phone calls and extra virtual sessions and provided schedule flexibility for SJA families, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA is offering quality support and accommodations during this time.

Parents

For parents of students in Junior Kindergarten, our Continuous Learning Plan expected parents to contact appropriate teachers to give or receive additional feedback or ask any questions and address concerns. When able, parents provided technical support for the student and assisted the student in uploading work to Seesaw, and parents also provided a comfortable, conducive workspace and device for learning. Parents captured this exceptional continuous learning experience in photos and videos of their child completing daily work and challenges and participating in extracurricular activities!

Senior Kindergarten Expectations

Teachers

Senior Kindergarten teachers used Seesaw daily for activities and instructional videos and hosted a weekly virtual call to go over instructions and concepts. They were readily available for phone calls and extra virtual calls if needed and provided schedule flexibility for SJA families, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA offers quality support and accommodations.

Grades 1 to 2 Expectations

Teachers

Grade 1 to 2 teachers used Seesaw as the main point of communication, posting activities and instructional videos daily for each subject and sharing morning announcements via Seesaw and/or email, containing the daily activities and links. School resources included RAZ Kids and Knowledgehook. Teachers hosted daily hour-long virtual calls focussing on concepts and learning skills, supported students in pre-booked individual conference times, were readily available for phone calls and extra video calls and provided flexibility for schedules, learning and activities, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA offers quality support and accommodations.

Students

Students in Grades 1 to 2 completed the activities available on Seesaw to the best of their ability. They were not required to complete all activities. They attended virtual class meetings, asked and answered questions during calls to strengthen their understanding and had access to additional support when they felt in need. Additionally, students took part in the exciting school events taking place daily, such as after school activities and daily challenges!
