Overview of JK to Grade 2 Continuous Academics

On March 23rd, our teachers rose to the challenge of continuous learning quickly and efficiently! Both homeroom and specialist classes are offered in creative, interactive online formats for our students. To accommodate the difficulties of delivering curriculum online, the school year is extended to June 30th.

Junior Kindergarten to Grade 2 students and parents have enjoyed printed-out packages, a regular Monday-to-Friday schedule with flexibility, live (synchronous) lessons,  face-to-face interaction between classmates and teachers on Zoom, pre-recorded video (asynchronous) lessons weekly to allow flexibility, tools shared daily on Seesaw including schedules, lessons, audio instructions, links, tasks, RAZ Kids assignments, and teacher feedback, and finally, pencil-paper activities and supplies to continue development of fine motor skills.

During our continuous learning, curriculum has increased focus on numeracy and literacy:

Language

The DRA assessments for Term 3 are being modified to be conducted in an online format, Term 3 OWAs will be replaced with a compilation of writing in a class anthology, novel studies are progressing as a read-aloud, group readings or individual readings with follow-up discussions and tasks and SK to Grade 2 students complete RAZ reading assignments.

Math

Lessons are being taught online at a slower pace to ensure conceptual understanding, which also allows for additional practice time. Assessments are conducted in various age-appropriate formats.

Additionally, Term 3 Units of Inquiry are continuing with modified lessons suited to an online platform, lessons with specialist teachers continue with weekly live and offline lesson options and our librarian is visiting classes for read-alouds and workshops as needed!

Junior Kindergarten Expectations

Teachers

Teachers send morning announcements via Seesaw and/or email, containing daily announcements, activities and links. They create bi-weekly printed packages to be delivered to families, host a daily Zoom call to go over instructions and concepts and use Seesaw for daily activities and instructional videos. Teachers are readily available for phone calls and extra Zoom sessions and provide schedule flexibility for SJA families, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA is offering quality support and accommodations during this time.

Parents

For parents of students in Junior Kindergarten, our Continuous Learning Plan expects parents to contact appropriate teachers to give or receive additional feedback or ask any questions and address concerns. When able, parents should provide technical support for the student and assist the student in uploading work to Seesaw, and parents should also provide a comfortable, conducive workspace and device for learning. In addition, we hope that parents will capture this exceptional continuous learning experience in photos and videos of their child completing daily work and challenges and participating in extracurricular activities!

Senior Kindergarten Expectations

Teachers

Senior Kindergarten teachers use Seesaw daily for activities and instructional videos and host a weekly Zoom call to go over instructions and concepts. They are readily available for phone calls and extra Zoom sessions if needed and provide schedule flexibility for SJA families, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA is offering quality support and accommodations during this time.

Grades 1 to 2 Expectations

Teachers

Grade 1 to 2 teachers use Seesaw as the main point of communication, posting activities and instructional videos daily for each subject and sharing morning announcements via Seesaw and/or email, containing the daily activities and links. Other school resources include RAZ Kids, Knowledgehook and Zoom. Teachers host daily hour-long Zoom calls focussing on concepts and learning skills, support students in pre-booked individual conference times, are readily available for phone calls and extra Zoom sessions and provide flexibility for schedules, learning and activities, reassuring parents that although our building may be closed, SJA is offering quality support and accommodations during this time.

Students

Students in Grades 1 to 2 are expected to complete the activities available on Seesaw to the best of their ability. They are not required to complete all activities. They are expected to attend Zoom meetings, ask and answer questions during Zoom calls to strengthen their understanding and always request additional support when they feel in need. Additionally, students are expected to partake in the exciting school events taking place daily, such as after school activities and daily challenges!
